You have only been on
the job for 2 weeks. You truly want to make a good impression and
demonstrate your competence. Now, Dr. Leech has ordered several
tests for Mrs. Alexandria Smith. He has ordered a STAT urinalysis,
a throat culture, a CBC, and a test for H Pylori.
What is a CLIA-waived test? Which of these tests ordered are
considered CLIA-waived? Explain the complexity level of each test
and what it means. Who can perform these tests?
CLIA-waived test is a non-technical form of laboratory testing that works under CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement and Amendments) regulations approved by the FDA. These tests will have a low risk for incorrect test results. Dipstick Urinalysis, Complete Blood Count, throat swab culture, H.Pyroli all will come under the CLIA-waived system. Dipstick Urinalysis is a more sensitive test that provides false-positive results. There is a high level of chance of variability in the differentials counts of blood. Throat culture test shows complexity in the differentiation of Type A and B influenza and H.Pyroli test can lead to an independent judgment of in case of small number or absence of organisms. Increased complexity can lead to increased regulations of tests. A waiver who have CLIA certification and requirements can perform these tests under proficiency test and quality control.
