Solutions

Expert Solution

When patients become ill, or they have a medical condition that block the use of their hands, we must perform oral care for that type of dependent patient.

First of all we should wear disposable gloves. Disposable gloves provide a obstacle to protect the nurse and patient from any type of infection.

Different types of equipment is required for oral care like soft toothbrush, toothpaste, clothing protection, glass of water for rinsing mouth etc.

Sitting position is very important for oral care to dependent patient. If possible then ask the patient to sit fully upright to prevent aspiration during mouth cleaning. The dorsal recumbent position is not safe because the patient may easily extract any secretions or fluids.

A soft toothbrush is recommended to avoid causing irritation and bleeding. First we should wet the toothbrush and apply some amount of tooth paste after that to clean the inner and outer surface of the teeth.

Water is very important to rinse the mouth. Tissue is used to dry around the mouth. If required then apply some moisturizer to patient's lips.
