There are times when a nurse must provide care for a client who is agitated and verbally or physically aggressive. The client may be psychotic, but the nurse must, in each case, remain in control of his/her own feelings, and intervene in the most appropriate manner.

After watching a segment regarding a violent client at Bellevue Hospital, answer the questions below. It’s not necessary to critique the staff in the video, just think of how you might respond.

1) When the client was rude or verbally abusive to me,, I shuld maintain the following precaution for myself..They are-

  • I should never see a violent patient alone
  • A particular distance should be maintain between the violent patient & myself
  • Always be prepare to move from the violent patient
  • A clear exit route or door always maintain
  • If patient become so much violent then Antipsychotic medicine should be administered as per Doctor's advice..

2) The following skills are necessary to maintain a professional, caring, therapeutic relationship-

  • Commuication skill should be good as much as possible
  • Assessment of the patient should be done in appropriate manner
  • Patient's emotional status should be checked at a regular besis
  • Mental status Examination (MSE) should be assessed at a regular besis
  • Interpersonal Relationship should be maintained .

3) I should communicate with this client on the basis of assessing their mental status and level of violence..In this type of patient Communication always should be done on the basis of mental status examination.

4) I learn the following idea from this experience-

  • In the time of dealing of a violent patient some precaution ( appropriate distance, proper exit route ) should be maintained
  • Mental status examination should be checked
  • Assessment of mental status is vey much important..
