A nurse is providing teaching to an adolescent client who has type 1 diabetes mellitus which of the following client statement indicates an understanding of the teaching

Type 1 dm is type of condition in which pancreases produces no or little insulin, which make body hypoglycemic with symptoms of polyphagia, polydipsia and polyuria. Health education is very important for to control blood glucose level and prevention of complication associated with uncontrolled diabetes

For any MCQ type question use a method of elimination and knowledge of health teaching related to Diabetes.

· I should drink 4 ounces of milk if my blood sugar is low is incorrect answer. The skimmed milk contains simple sugar, lactose and it is fast acting carbohydrate. It is effective in the low blood glucose. But in the option is not specified that type of milk so this option is incorrect.

· I should test my urine for ketones if I become sick is correct. Body require glucose for energy, when body doesn’t get glucose it will start burning fat and when fat burn it produces ketone bodies. Ketone bodies buildup in the blood and urine leads to ketoacidosis. Check your ketone level when you fall sick to prevent any complication.

· I should have an A1C level greater than 8% is not correct option. If A1C level is greater than 8% that means the patient doesn’t have controlled diabetes and have high risk of developing the complication of diabetes.

· I should decrease my food intake prior to exercise is not correct option as demand of carbs is increase before or after workout to prevent the low of blood glucose level if patient doesn’t eat before workout his blood glucose level will drip down and he will become hypoglycemic.

Hence option b is a correct answer, if multiple answer is possible then option a and b as milk is act as fast acting carbohydrate for hypoglycemia
