Diabetes mellitus type 1 is characterised by destruction of pancreatic beta cells whereas in diabetes mellitus type 2 there is impaired insulin secretion.
Nursing implications:-
1.there is insulin injections required for type 1 since body in not able to produce insulin of its own while there is no need of such injections in type 2
2.while moderate exercise is recommended in both cases, type 2 patients are suggested to aim at reducing their fat by exercise whereas type 1 patients are suggested to exercise to maintain muscle tone so that insulin requirement is kept low
3.a balanced diet is necessary for type 1 as well as type 2.complex carbohydrates and protein rich foods are suggested for type 1 whereas for type 2 calorie intake is suggested to keep in check.
4.oral medications are given to stimulate beta cells to produce insulin in type 2 whereas no need of such medication is required in type 1
5.measuring blood glucose levels regularly is of essence in both type
