a nurse is preparing to administer insulin glargine to a child who has type 1 diabetes mellitus. the client is receive 10 units subcutaneous once daily at bedtime. reading the label on the unopened vial the nurse should determine that the vial contains how many dosage of this medication?
insulin glargine 100unit/ml (U-100) do not mix with other insulin . use only if solution is clear and colorless with no particles visible one 100 ml vial
Number of doses available in the unopened vial of insulin glargine injection can be calculated as mentioned below:
Dose to be given to the child = 10 units
Dose available in the vial= 100units/ml i.e. (U-100)
Number of dose available in this vial
= units of medicine per ml available in the vial / units of medicine to be given to client
= 100/10 = 10
10 doses of insulin glargine injection are available per ml in this vial.
Note: insulin glargine injection is usually supplied as 10 mL multiple-dose vial .This insulin should not be freezed.But opened vial can be stored for 28 days in refrigerator [2 - 8°C] or room temperature [below 30°C].Unopened vial should refrigerated [2 - 8°C] until expiry date or kept in room temperature [below 30°C] for 28 days.
