Expert Solution

Many studies have shown that Social Media and Self Esteem are negatively correlated. People who use social media tend to have lower rates of life satisfaction comapred to those who do not. It was also seen that people who spent a large amount of time on social media and then stopped using them, experienced higher levels of happiness. This occurs because people of Facebook often show only the bright side of their life. They tend to not disclose the events or happenings where negative incidents occur to them. This shows a false sense that their live is "picture perfect". Another person who views this would compare it with their own lives, which understandably has ups and downs, and feels that their satisfaction with their life is lower. As a result, their level of unhappiness also decreases.
Another negative impact of the virtual world is Cyber Bullying. The rates of bullying over the virtual world is much higher than in real life. This also has to do the fact that this form of bullying is not face to face. It is easier to say harmful things to each other because the other person is not in front of you. However, the effects of bullying are the same as the other person is still affected by the harmful words.
Many people evaluate their lifes or face value on the number of likes they get on their post or profile picture. If they get a less number, they feel that they are not beautiful or that there is something wrong in their post. It is very dangerous to have one's life assessment in the hands of the others.
A large number of cases arise where people are cheated or duped because the people they interact with on Facebook are not who they say they are. As a result, people fall prone to false schemes where money is transferred and they do not get what was promised to them. It also takes a more dangerous route when small children are lured into meeting strangers because they are not aware of the harsh realities of the virtual world.
The above are just some of the many negative impacts of the virtual world.
