Nursing profession is very dynamic and the increasing demand for skillful expertise is the need of the time. And to strengthen the career, one has to set up goals in life, it might be personal or professional. Goals can be the blueprint of the stages of development and it help us remain focussed towards our planned achievements. Depending on the priorities and time frame, the goals can be short or long term in nature.
Short term goals-
1) To develop clinical skills and understand different disease condition and the recommended treatment regimen.
This can help in acquiring clinical knowledge which are very technical and can help in treating the patients with utmost care and safety. It makes the nurse, more independent to work effectively for the betterment of the patients.
2) Undergoing additional short term certification program which is needed for the investment of knowledge theoretically which can help the nurse to be confident while treating the patients with devotion and commitment.
3) Development of personality and self attitude to accept the clients with patience and treat them effectively. Developing skills like writing, speaking can bring in confidence. Referring and reading books related to profession and others can keep the nurse updated with information around the world.
Long term goals
1) Undertake PhD in nursing program for upgradation on qualification. This helps the nurse to compete with the requirements of the high demand.
This enables the nurse to undertake research with proper knowledge. This type of learning can boost the interest to take up further studies in the clinical field and implement strategies for the betterment of the patients.
2) Studying the statutory requirements to deal with medico legal cases. This helps the nurse to deal appropriately with legal implications by maintaining proper documentation of patients with maintaining confidentiality. Because, practising independently can be effective if these factors are learnt in advance.
3) Understanding the locality and the healthcare resources available within the area is necessary because knowing the area can help to know the complete picture of the environment and parameters like total population, birth and death rates, prevalent diseases, vaccination status, referral services.
