*ANA code of ethics

* The purpose of code of ethics are:

a) It is a statement of ethical values ,obligations,duties and professional ideals of nurses individually and collectively.

b) It is profession's non negotiable ethical standard .

c) It is an expression of nursing's own understanding of its commitment to society.

* Provision 2:- includes;

* Provision 2 of code of ethics indicates that the nurse's primary commitment is to the patient,whether an individual,family,group,community or population.

2.1) Primacy of the patient interests :- The nurses primary commitment is to the recipient of nursing and health care services ,that is the patient ( can be an individual,family,group,community,or population) .

* Plan of care must reflect the commitment to uniqueness,worth and dignity of patient.

* Care must be planned and implemented according to the patiet's desire , will and  wish.

* Patien is given primary importance .

EXAMPLE:- Patient is given full freedom to decide about their care and refuse care .Always explain the purpose of each nursing procedure and carried out according to patient's wish ,Treatment options for renal stone is explained to the patient ( like lithotripsy,surgery,medications )and patient is given opportunity to choose and final decision is made by the patient.

2.2) Conflict of interests for nurses:- Nurses may experience conflicts like expectations from patients ,families, physicians,colleagues ,healthcare organizations and health plans. Nurses must examine conflicts arising between their own personal and professional values and the values and interests of others icluding patients.

* EXAMPLE:- Influencing the recruitment, selection, promotion etc.

2.3) Collboration:- The goal of health care is to address the health of the patient and the public .The complexcity of health care requires strong support and active participation of all health profession. Nurses should actively foster collaborative planning to provide high quality, patient-specific health care . Collaboration requires mutual trust, recognition, respect, transparency, shared decision making and open communication among all who share concern and responsibility for health outcomes.

* EXAMPLE:-A patient on ventilatory support needs colllaboratory care from physician,intensive care nurse, respiratory therapist, physiotherapist, nutritionist, counsellor and social worker. It is the resposnbility of the nurse to make sure the collaborative care is given

2.4)Professional boundaries :- The nurse regoganise and maintain appropriate personal relationship boundaries within thier professional role. Prefessional relationships are theraputic in nature and remain within professional boundaries  .

* EXAMPLE:- Nurse will take care of a patient with empathy not with sympathy.
