Ridgers H. 2013. Caring for older HIV-positive men who have sex with men. Nurs Stand. Feb 6-12; 27(23):44-9.
Although a cure for HIV does not yet exist, antiretroviral treatment can keep the affected person healthy for many years, and greatly reduces the chance of transmitting HIV to their partner(s) if taken consistently and correctly. Antiretroviral treatment reduces the amount of virus (or viral load) in your blood and body fluids.
Hazel Ridgers conducted a study to explore the issues faces by the nurses caring for people ageing with HIV in non-HIV healthcare settings in UK. The author paid particular attention to issues that affect older HIV-positive men who have sex with men. Those who have lived into older age with HIV, as well as older men who are newly diagnosed with the virus, are at risk of a range of non-acquired immune deficiency syndrome-related co-morbidities, like opportunistic infections. Opportunistic infections can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungus, even parasites. Common opportunistic infections that are Candidiasis (thrush), Coccidioidomycosis, Cryptococcosis, Cryptosporidiosis , Cytomegalovirus Herpes simplex, Herpes zoster (shingles), Histoplasmosis, HIV-related neurocognitive disorders and HIV wasting syndrome. This result in need of care for such patients not only in HIV specialist settings but also in other areas of healthcare provision
The article point out the fact that the availability of antiretroviral therapy has changed the course of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease progression, and as a result the face of HIV in the UK is ageing. The spread of HIV infection to the men who have sex with men remain disproportionately affected.
