A person walks into a room that has two flat mirrors on opposite walls. The mirrors produce multiple images of the person. Consider only the images formed in the mirror on the left. When the person is 5.40 m from the mirror on the left wall and 6.70 m from the mirror on the right wall, find the distance from the person to the first three images seen in the mirror on the left wall
First image (m)
Second Image (m)
Third image (m)
The magnitude of the distance of the object and image is same in the case of a flat mirror.
The location of the first image will be 5.4 m.
The image at this location acts as object for the second mirror. The distance of the object for the second mirror is 2(5.4)+6.7 m=17.5 m Thus, the image formed in the second mirror is 17.5 m from the mirror. This acts as object for the first mirror. Thus, the distance of the object for the first mirror is, 17.5 m+6.7 m+5.4 m= 29.6 m.
Thus, the location of the second image in the left mirror is 29.6 m.
The image at this location acts as object for the second mirror. The distance of the object for the second mirror is 29.6 m+5.4 m+6.7 m=41.7 m Thus, the image formed in the second mirror is 41.7m from the mirror. This acts as object for the first mirror. Thus, the distance of the object for the first mirror is, 41.7 m+6.7 m+5.4 m= 53.8 m
hus, the location of the third image in the left mirror is 53.8 m.
