i was posted in psychiatric ward as a nurse and was assigned to a patient who was 25 years old and diagnosed with depression. i used caritas caring for caring for my patient which focus on caring with love, spirit and mind for the healing and reduce suffering of the patient. on the first day, i talked with the patient's relatives and referred the medical history so as to know more about his premorbid personality and his past medical conditions followed by which i introduced myself and started to interaction with the patient along with meeting his basic needs related to treatment. first he was reluctant to talk and maintained silence and this continued about 5 days. i used unconditional positive regard and warmth in all conversation i made. even i ensured that the information shared would be confidential. i interviwed him to knew better about his physical, psychological and spritual pain and more specifically any suicidal intent, desire and capability if any. to my surprise, on the seventh day he started asking me to provide orientation to the services and was clarifying doubts. i understood that he started developing trust and rapport with me. i used therapeutic communication techniques while talking with the person. at the same time, he was undergoing treatment with antidepressants, and was showing better than before in terms of energy, mood and activities of daily living. i made sure that the environment is caring and therapeutic by providing adequate ventilation, removed sharp objects, diversional activities such as space to watch televison, read newspapers and walk around. i took feedback about the services daily while i visit him. i offered my time with him while drinking coffee or eating snacks so as to understand him better therapeutically as a health care professional. later, when the time arrived for him to discharge, he acknowledged my care and acceptance of him as unique and meeting his needs. he told me that he will take care of himself and use techniques of relaxation and diversion which i taught him while he was undergoing treatment. overall, it was a memorable experience in my professional life.
