Differentiate emotional aggression form instrumental aggression. Define and give an example of each.
According to social psychologists, aggression is a behavior which is intended to harm another individual. There are different types of agression depending upon the motive/ reason/intention behind the behavior.
Emotional agression is when an indivual acts with little amount of forethought or intention and mostly by impulsive reaction. This type of agression is the result of immediate reaction towards an unfavorable stimuli and thus doesnot involve any conscious preplanning to hurt the other individual.
For example: A football fan destroys the seats in the gallery after his team loses the match.
Instrumental agression or otherwise called cognitive aggression is when an individual behaves aggressively with a pure intention to harm the other indivual. This is forethought and well planned action with less or no affective component.
For example: a chain snatcher hits a lady and steals her money.
Terrorism is also a form of instrumental aggression.
