Which of the following types of T-cells would be considered the “youngest” type and the "oldest" type?
a. Effector T-cell
b. Immature T-cell
c. Naive T-cell
Youngest - Immature T cells
Oldest - Effector T cells
Explanation: Immature T cells ( T stem cells ) are formed from
hematopoetic stem cells . Immature T cells migrate to thymus gland
where they differentiate , proliferate and mature to T cells and
thus, become active after becoming mature . It is not ready to
encounter pathogen.
NAive T cells - It is also considered immature unlike activated T
cells . It can however respond to pathogen , and it results in
initiation of immune response. Naive T cells can interact with
antigen presenting cells that uses an MHC molecule to present
antigen .
Effector cells - Naive T cells mature and proliferate into into
effector T cells , It interacts with host cell not with the
pathogen to carry out immune response. They use coreceptors like
CD8 or CD 4. Naive T cells with CD8 become effector cytotoxic T
cells and those with CD4 becomes effector T helper cells
.
