Imagine you wanted to design a quasi-experiment to study the hypothesis that Changing the start of the day in high school start time to 8:30 a.m. or later causes teens to suffer less depression. Imagine that there are four public high schools, all in the same area of the country, that are willing to participate in this study. Currently, they all start between 7:20 a.m. and 7:35 a.m., but in fact, two of the high schools are already planning to change their starting times next fall.
1.Why might it be more practical to conduct a quasi-experiment on this question, rather than a true experiment? (2 pts)
2. Using one of the designs below, design a quasi-experiment to research this question. Clearly identify which study type you are using and clearly demonstrate knowledge of the study design. (4 pts)
•Nonequivalent control group design (posttest-only)
•Nonequivalent control group design (pretest/posttest).
•Interrupted time-series design
•Nonequivalent control group interrupted time-series design
ANSWER::
1)- In quasi-experiment researcher manipulates the independent variable without the random distribution of participants to conditions or orders of conditions whereas in a true experiment, sample are randomly assigned to either the treatment or the control group. It is more suitable to conduct quasi experiment for the following hypothesis as the the full control over the sample is not possible in the following condition.
2)
Quasi experiments are those experiments which do not need to fill all the requirements of a true experiment. They are conducted in such situations where the experimenter have some control over the manipulation of independent variables but fails to arrange for other basic requirements of a true experiment, that is creating equivalent groups. Thus, it can be said that a quasi experiment is basically an attempt to simulate a true experiment and is also called a compromise design. These are partly like true experiments, they control some extraneous variables but not all of them
Hypothesis : Changing the start time in High school start time to 8:30 a.m. or later causes teens to suffer less depression.
4 public high schools in the area are there willing to participate in the experiment and they all currently start between 7:20 - 7:30 am and two of them are already planning to change their timings next fall.
Non equivalent control group design (pretest/posttest)
The experimenter can divide each school's high school students into two groups through randomization and create a control group and experimental group
Pretest of mental health illnesses can be given to all the participants to know if they already have anxiety or depression and then after the experimental group is given the treatment (changing in school's start time) a post test should be taken and the posttest should be taken for the control group even though they did not go through any treatment
School A - Control group (AG1) & Experimental Group (AG3)
Pretest for AG1 Posttest for AG1 (Control group students do not have any changes in their timings of the school)
Prestest for AG3 X Posttest for AG3 (Experimental Group students receive the treatment X and have their school time changed )
School B - Control Group (BG1) & Experimental Group (BG3)
Pretest for BG1 Posttest for BG1 (Control group students do not have any changes in their timings of the school)
Prestest for BG3 X Posttest for BG3 (Experimental Group students receive the treatment X and have their school time changed )
School C - Control Group (CG1) & Experimental Group (CG3)
Pretest for CG1 Posttest for CG1 (Control group students do not have any changes in their timings of the school)
Prestest for CG3 X Posttest for CG3 (Experimental Group students receive the treatment X and have their school time changed )
School D - Control Group (DG1) & Experimental Group (DG3)
Pretest for DG1 Posttest for DG1 (Control group students do not have any changes in their timings of the school)
Prestest for DG3 X Posttest for DG3 (Experimental Group studnents receive the treatment X and have their school time changed )
Now after the results of the pretests and posttests are obtained for all the four schools they can be compared and a suitable conclusion can be drawn
