Design and describe a controlled experiment to test the hypothesis that acid precipitation inhibits the growth of Elodea, a common freshwater plant. Include the controls.
First of all i added 10 Elodea plant to 4 tanks with 2 litres of water in each of them. I added 5M nitric acid to each tank until that tank number 2 had a pH of 6.0, tank number 3 had a pH of 5.0 , tank numbe 4 had a pH of 4.0 . But , the tank number 1 remained at a control with pH 7.0. the pH was recorded with the help of a pH metre while adding the acids.
The survival rates were recorded every hour for 10 days .
Hence, the data was analyzed how acid affects the Elodea plant life.
RESULTS-
The graph showed that when the pH dropped, the survival rates of plants decreased too. The graph made showed that , only 4 elodea were left in ph4 tank and pH 5 tank, 6 were left in the pH 6 tank and 7 was left in the pH 7 tank. Hence, the data observed was showing the hypothesis to be correct.
As tha acidity increased, the pH dropped , more of the plants died.
Hence, this result observed showed that acid precipitation inhibits the growth of Elodea plant , a common fresh water plant and other fresh water organisms and plants reciding in that area.
This, experiment is also useful for people to understand , what these natural and man made gasses have effect on aquatic lives.
