How long will it take 10.0 ml of Ne gas to effuse through aporous barrier if it has been observed that 125 mins are required for 10.0 ml of AR gas to effuse through the same barrier?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer.According to Graham's law of effusion ,rate of effusion is inversly proportional to square root of mass of gas particles.    r     M ----(1)

given problem is for two gases Ne and Ar .

        r1 /r2 = M1 /M2 =V1x t2/V2x t1   [V1 volume of Ne ,V2=volume of Ar, t1=time of effusion of Ne , t2 = time of effusion of Ar.]

                  M1 /M2 =V1x t2/V2x t1

                   20.18/39.95=10 x t2/10 x 125

                        t2 =1.98 x 125 = 175.89 mins

Argon gas takes 175.89 mins to effuse through the same barrier.
