A 500-mL flask of Ne at 500 torr is connect
ed to a 300 mL flask of Xe at 700 torr.
If the gases are allowed to mix and fill both
flasks, what will be the partial pressure
of each gas and what will be the
total pressure of the mixture?
After mixing , number of moles of each gas remains same , temperature is constant .
P1V1 = P2V2
500torr × 500ml = PNe ×(500+300)ml
PNe = 500×500/800 Torr = 312.5 Torr
Similarly we can apply for Xe gas :
PXe = 700torr × 300ml/(300+500)ml = 262.5 Torr
Ptotal = 312.5 + 262.5 = 575 Torr
Partial pressure of Ne = 312.5torr
Partial pressure of Xe = 262.5torr
Total pressure of mixture = 575torr
