Nosocomial infections or Hospital care associated infections are also called healthcare associated infection. These are usually the secondary infections that occur either simultaneously with the primary infections or after patient is discharged from the hospital. It is a type of infection acquired by patients during the course of hospital stay. These infections affect patients of all ages and are commonly seen in patients with decreased immune competencies. Such infections can be seen in aged patient and children who are susceptible. Symptoms of such infections are not present before the patienhs admission in the hospital.
These types of infections are present worldwide and have led to the loss of immense government funds owing to prolonged patient stay and rise in the antibiotic resistant infections. The major drawback of nosocomial infections is the lack of set criteria of onset of the symptoms associated with such infections. Preventive measures include keeping surrounding areas and hospitals free of contaminants and using sterilized instruments for operative and postoperative treatment of all patients. The hospital personnel should take necessary steps to educate and create awareness among hospital admitted patients to prevent rise in such secondary infections.
