construct a table comparing the structure of the three major types of cartilage tissue. include in the column:location of specific cartilage, composition of the matrix, concentration of chondrocytes, strength of the tissue. cite a minimum of two locations for each.
Cartilage is a non-vascular and flexible connective tissue located throughout the body which provides support and cushioning for adjacent tissues and bones.
Chondrocytes are the main cells in cartilage. The ground substance is chondroitin sulfate and the sorrounding fibrous sheath is called perichondrium. Three types of cartilage are there as below mentioned.
Hyaline, Fibrous, and Elastic cartilage.
Cartilage | Structure | Location | compostion of matrix | concentration of chondrocytes | strength of tissue |
Hyaline | Simple structure and glassy apprearance | Found on many joint surfaces and the rib tips |
Matrix is primarily made of type 2 collagen and chondroitin sulphate. |
Consist of cells of angular form. Cells have straight outlines. | Very tough and have tensile strength |
Fibrous | White fibrocartilage consists of a mixture of white fibrous tissue and cartilaginous tissue | Found in pubic symphysis, temporal mandibular joint | Thick layers of dense collagen fibres. Matrix contains type1 and 2 collagens. | Many chondrocytes are located within their lacunae and are spaced between the fibers. | Tough and dense in nature |
Elastic | Contains elastic fiber networks and collagen fibers. | Found in epiglottis and the pinnae | Elastic fibres forms bundles which gives great flexibility | Chondrocytes are found in a threadlike network of elastic fibres within the matrix | Greater flexibility due to fibres. |
