Explain why broad spectrum antibiotics can exacerbate the infection.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer- Broad spectrum antibiotics as the name suggests it applies for wide range of disease causing by Bacteria. It is used when bacterial is being suspected but the group of its still unknown.

So, Broad spectrum antibiotics exacerbate the infection because as we know trillions of bacteria resides or colonize into the human body. Due to broad nature it disrupting the normal microbiome. Due to disruption of normal bacterial flora leads to disrupt immunity, nutrition, and relative overgrowth is being seen.

And so any overgrowth against the drug leads to secondary infections. This leads infection to last for long and taking cost more to treat also .

Example of broad spectrum antibiotics are tetracycline.

Mechanisms that are developed to resistance against the antibiotics-

1. Decrease permeability of the drug

2. increase drug efflux

3. Decrease affinity of the drug by ribosome binding sites.

4. Enzymatic inactivation of the drugs.
