What are the differences between identities that may be situationally negotiated and those that cannot?
IDENTITY NEGOTIATION THEORY:
Changing our identity according to the persons,situations , time etc., is called identity negotiation. This is mainly divided in two patterns. Those are
1. Self verification
2. Self categerization
1.SELF VERIFICATION:
In this process person estimates/ verifies what others will think about him and He behaves according to that.
2.SELF REGULATION:
In this process persons regulates/estimates his role/level in a social group and behaves according to that.
SITUATIONALLY NEGOTIATED IDENTITIES:
1.Social cultural change
2.Environmental change
3.Development and role change
4.Acquisition/Loss of abilities
5.Strategic self verification
6.Self initiated change
7.Gateway indetities
1.SOCIAL CULTURAL CHANGE:
Each and every social cultural groups have some normative expectations,rules and regulations. When person wants to fit in that social group he changes his identity according to their normative expectations, rules and regulations.
2.ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE:
If environment is changed according to that we will change our identities. for instance , if we joined in a new job we remain silent there. Once we fit for the environment we will change identity and take initiative.
3.DEVELOPMENT AND ROLE CHANGE:
Development in any manner and Role change persuades to change our identity. For instance, if children came in to adulthood, They changes their identities and behaves according to that.
4.AQUISITION/LOSS OF ABILITIES:
If we aquired new abilities or lost our existed abilities persuade to change our identity.
5.STRATEGIC SELF VERIFICATION:
In this process person sets a goal and changes his identity according to his goal.
6.SELF INITIATED CHANGES:
In this process person like some charecteristics and tries to penetrate them into his/her identity. For example, If we like Obama charecteristics, we like to act like him. But it is really tough and many times will fail
7.GATEWAY IDENTITIES:
In this process person changes his identities according to situations. But he changes his identity against of his conscience.
IDENTITIES IRRESPECTIVE OF SITUATIONS:
1.SELF RESPECT
2.EGO
3.GENERALIZING
1.SELF RESPECT:
Persons who maintain self respect don't want to change their identities under any circumstances.
2.EGO:
Persons who feel proud about them don't want to change their identites according to situations.
3.GENERALIZING:
Pesons who generalizes all situations, persons, environments etc., never thought to change their identites.
