Disaster management has been defined as the continuous and integrated process of planning, organizing coordinating measures which are necessary or expedient for
1.prevention of danger or threat of any disaster.
2.mitigation or reduction of risk of any disaster, or its severity or consequences
3.capacity building
4.preparedness to deal with any disaster
5.prompt response to any threatening disaster situation or disaster.
6.assessing the severity or magnitude of any disaster
7.evacuation, rescue and relief
8.rehabilitation and reconstruction.
prevention and mitigation
Any measure taken in advance which aims to reduce the impact of disaster through various mitigation methods. Which may structural (embankments, cyclone shelters, components of earthquake resistance construction )or non structural(soft components such as disaster management planning, insurance, training on emergency management etc)
capacity building
It is the process by which peoples, society or organizations systematically develop their capacity to overtime to achieve social and economic goals.it involves learning and different types of training.political awarness, financial resources etc
preparedness
it is about the knowledge and capacities developed by governments, response and recovery organizations, communities and individuals to effectively anticipate, respond to and recover from the impact of likely, imminent or current disasters. It is based on the sound analysis of disaster risks with early warning system.including stockpiling of equipment and supplies, the develooment of arrangement and coordination, eevacuation and public information.the related term reediness, describes the ability to quickly and appropriately respond when required.
response
Corresponds to actions taken directly before, during or immediately after a disaster inorder to save lives, reduce health impacts, ensure public safety and meet the basic needs of the people affected.
evacuation rescue and relief
Deals with the immediate actions taken up following a disastrous event aimed as saving peoples lives and environmental damages.
It deals with isolating people impacted by disaster after the disaster strikes or rescuing them during or immediately after a disaster and prividing immediate assistance, food, shelter and other basic needs
Rehabilitation is about the restoration of basic services and facilities for the functioning of a community or society affected by disaster.
reconstruction
it is the medium and long-term rebuilding and sustainable restoration of resilient critical infrastructures, services, housing facilities and livehoods required for the full functioning of the community or society affected by disaster
All phases are very important in disaster management process.
