Indication/uses Prevention of nausea and vomiting Fever, minor aches, pains Constipation, avoid straining during defecation. folate deficiency, macrocytic anemia, megaloblastic anemia, inadequate dietary intake, pregnancy. anxiety disorders, status epileptics.
Side effects Headache, constipation, painful urination, fatigue. Nausea, itching, rashes, headache, clay-colored stool. abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, rash. Nausea, fatigue, trouble sleeping, weight loss, muscular pains, mental depression.

Increased sleeping, confusion, hallucinations,

muscle weakness, trouble in swallowing.

General alerts Avoid in patients hypersensitivity to ondansetron and liver disease patient. Hypertoxicity, acute poisoning, and chronic ingestion lead to neutropenia, leukopenia. hepertoxicity. CNS depression, Gi disorders, Sensory impairment.
Warnings/precautions Not recommended for pregnant, breastfeeding woman and children under 4 years. Cholestyramine may decrease the acetaminophen absorption. warnings with congestive heart failure, DM, edema. use with caution during lactation. Renal, hepatic impairment, myasthenia gravis, narrow-angle glaucoma, GI disorders
Drug Interaction Interaction with alcohol and medicines like Amitriptyline, carbamazepine, Amiodarone, apomorphine.

Interact with alcohol.

Interact with drugs such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampicin.

Interact with mineral oil. Interact with chloramphenicol, phenytoin

Interact with alcohol, cimetidine.

Interact with clozapine, sodium oxybate.

Contraindications Ecg changes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, hepatic impairment. Hypersensitivity, allergies. Atonic constipation, sodium restricted patient, fecal impaction, intestinal obstruction, colon, structural anomalies of the colon. pernicious anemia, aplastic anemia, undiagnosed anemia Pregnancy, lactation, narrow-angle glaucoma, alcohol intoxication.
Nursing intervention

Monitor fluid and electrolyte status.

check vital signs.

Monitor cardiovascular status.

Check vital signs.

Assess for signs and symptoms.

Check for hepatotoxicity.

Use periodically with the interval of 3 days.

Check for diarrhea.

Obtain a detailed history of drug intake, alcohol usage, oral contraceptives, barbiturates.

Assess for fatigue, weakness, dyspnea.

Monitor patient's therapeutic plasma levels.

Check for signs and symptoms.

Check

CBC count and liver function periodically in long-term therapy.

Check for mood disorders or changes.

Patient teaching Aware of side effects and allergies to Ondansetron.

Do not self-medicate without doctor prescription.

Educate about the drug overdose and side effects.

Encourage more amounts of fluids.

Avoid use of mineral oil.

Do not take for prolonged periods of time.

Educate about the diet rich in folic acid.

Inform that the urine in yellowish color.

Look for rash or any side effects.

Educate about the side effects.

Give warnings about sleepiness during the daytime.

Do not withdraw from the medication suddenly.
