Classification: nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
Dosage & Frequency:
Indocin suppocitories: 50 mg rectal use only. not for intravagibal or oral use (external use only)
Indomethacin capsules: 25 mg twice/ thrice a day. maximum 150-200 mg per day not more than this suggested.
eg: shoulder pain (bursitis): capsule: 75-150 mg daily divided in 3-4 doses.
It should be avoided in last trimester.
Route: IV, oral capsules and suppositories.
MOA: Unlike other NSAIDS MOA is not fuly understood but studies shows that it involves inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2). Potent inhibitor of prostaglandins in peripheral tissues. prostagladins sensitizes the afferent nerves and the action of bradykinin in in inducing the pain. therefore it inhibits the synthesis of praotagladins and suppresses pain and inflammation.
side effects and nursing addons:
In pregnancy: constriction of the ductus arteriosus prenatally, pulmonary hypertension, nonclosure of the ductus arteriosus postnatally, degenerative changes, intracranial bleeding, renal dysfunction.
neonates:reduction in urine output.seizures.
Not recomended for nursing mothers.
should not be prescribed for patients younger than 14 years of age.
Other side effects include:
tinnitus, retinal disturbances, vertigo, dyspepsia, diarrhea
