Describe a time when a nurse had to make a decision in which you were conflicted between your professional role and your Christian beliefs.
This question is from a nurses perspective in a conflict during a rotation in a healthcare facility.
Religion and work place is a long stigmatic battle that nurses face inside the fraternity, some are favourable towards their own and some are religiously neutral and some do not see religion as a part of professional life.
The ethical part of the religion as a profession is very limited and its very difficult to understand the complexity of it. Religion in workplace brings most difficult situations for the employees of any genre. The most important conflict is when the employee wants a favourable shift to work, desire to take time off/duty off, and to get employee benefits and profitability.
How, should a nurse or any employee manage this when holding senior positions,
1. start the discussion with softness and kindness and try to avoid any altercation religiously,
2. put small notices about avoidance of discriminations
3. place yourself above the standards
4. if forced make difficult employees understand the civil rights of employment
5. Religion has to be considered when offering drinks, food and any other essentials try to keep non-alcoholic acceptable drinks, plain universally accepted foods etc…
6. Avoid calling anyone by their surnames or names which represent their religion
7. Discrimination because of religion and favouring any one particular religious belief is a criminal offence.
8. Discrimination is of many types direct discrimination: in which you directly favour one particular section, indirect discrimination: in which you make certain arrangements that in turn favour particular section, harassment: you take stern and conclusive steps to control a group / section of employees, victimisation: non selection or removal of people from one section.
9. Respect religious freedom
10. Respect gender equality
