Describe three techniques for “perpetual storage” of hazardous wastes. If you had to make a decision among the three techniques for disposing of dioxin-contaminated waste, would you be able to recommend one?
technques for perpetual storage are
(1) use of surface impoundments & specially built warehouses that hold wastes in ideal condition & prevent any material from leaking into the environment.
Holding of hazardous material until they treated or disposed .Hazardous waste is stored prior to treatment. It prevent leakage of hazardous waste into surrounding .
(2) deposition in geologically stable salt formations .Wastes solidified in dry geologically stable, solution mined repository. The repository is isolated from all ground water aquifers by the impermeable salt formation & is constructed below the deepest potable aquifer & underground sources of drinking water in the area.
solidified waste is permanently isolated from human activities & inadvertent intrusion .
salt is self - healing ,thereby providing its own inherent mechanism for perpetual maintenance.
hence i will recommend this technique.
(3)deposition deep in the ground in acid region where ground water is absent .
