In the area of culture and leadership GLOBE project have generated important research findings. House et al (2004) published Culture, Leadership, and Organizations; The GLOBE Study of 62 Societies.

Across 62 countries, the GLOBE project investigates how cultural values are related to organizational practices, conceptions of leadership, the economic competitiveness of societies, and the human condition of its members.

One hundred and seventy co-country investigators and over 17,000 managers participated worldwide. Data were collected in each country from three indigenous companies representing the financial services, food processing, and telecommunications. They used qualitative methods to assist their development of quantitative instruments.

Culture and Leadership Across the World: The GLOBE Book of In-Depth Studies of 25 Societies is the second major publication of GLOBE in 2007.

GLOBE researchers identified the nine units of measurement or nine cultural dimensions. The Figure 1 list them by name.

Performance Orientation

Uncertainty Avoidance

Humane Orientation

Institutional Collectivism

In-Group Collectivism

Assertiveness

Gender Egalitarianism

Future Orientation

Power Distance

Figure 1. The Nine Units of Measurement or "Cultural Dimensions"

Of the above 9, I choose the following dimension to compare with other culture:

Performance Orientation

It reflects the extent to which a community encourages and rewards innovation, high standards, excellence, and performance improvement (Grove, 2005).

HIGH PERFORMANCE ORIENTATION societies have characteristics such as...

  • Value training and development.
  • Value competitiveness and materialism.
  • View formal feedback as necessary for performance improvement.
  • Value what one does more than who one is.
  • Expect direct, explicit communication.

LOW PERFORMANCE ORIENTATION societies have characteristics such as...

  • Value societal and family relationships.
  • Value harmony with the environment.
  • View formal feedback as judgmental and discomfiting.
  • Value who one is more than what one does.
  • Expect indirect, subtle communication.

Conclusion:

I am an US citizen and I value and meditate on HIGH PERFORMANCE ORIENTATION as my society has characteristics such as...

  • Value training and development.
  • Value competitiveness and materialism.
  • View formal feedback as necessary for performance improvement.
  • Value what one does more than who one is.
  • Expect direct, explicit communication.

I follow the above dimension with sincerity. But, in a country like Srilanka or India, as I know from my friends, they do not value the above dimensional values of HIGH PERFORMANCE ORIENTATION.They still follow the LOW PERFORMANCE ORIENTATION societies have characteristics such as:

  • Value societal and family relationships.
  • Value harmony with the environment.
  • View formal feedback as judgmental and discomfiting.
  • Value who one is more than what one does.
  • Expect indirect, subtle communication.
