Sexually transmitted diseases are defined as infectious diseases that gets transmitted with sexual contact, serological transmission or due to serum transfusion.

It has an incidence of about 376 million new cases of STDs reported worldwide and there is a trend in its high prevalence in adolescent age group.

Types:

Syphilis

Chlamydial infections

Gonnorheoa

AIDS

Trichomoniasis

Herpes etc.

Syphilis:

• Chancre are usually seen in genitals, anus, or mouth.
• Rash, fatigue, fever, headaches, joint pain, weight loss, hair loss

Chlamydial infections:

• pain or discomfort during sex or urination
• greenish yellow discharge
• lower abdomen pain

Gonnorheoa:

• a white, yellowish or green-colored discharge from genital organ
• pain or discomfort during sex or urination
• more frequent urination than usual
• itching around the genitals

Management:

Chlamydia, Syphilis, gonnorheoa are curable with medication and lifestyle changes whereas, AIDS, Herpes etc are difficult to cure.

Antibiotics are prescribed in cases of bacterial STDs. Viral STDs are difficult to be managed.
