What Is Ayurvedic Medicine?
The ancient Indian medical system, also known as Ayurveda, is based on ancient writings that rely on a “natural” and holistic approach to physical and mental health. Ayurvedic medicine is one of the world’s oldest medical systems and remains one of India’s traditional health care systems. Ayurvedic treatment combines products (mainly derived from plants, but may also include animal, metal, and mineral), diet, exercise, and lifestyle.
What is this modality used for? and give a description of its benefits, and a description of its contraindications.
In Ayurveda, there are mainly three treatment modalities in my opinion, which are useful in the treatment or management of any disease, these are Ahara (Food), Vihara (Lifestyle, exercise) and Aushadha (Medicine). There is a famous quote saying “Let thy food be the medicine” which clearly defines the importance of food. In Ayurveda, there is a quote which says “If the food has been taking by right norms there is no need of medicine and if the food has not been taking by right norms then the medicine will not be effective. So, the food, which is responsible for our life, is also responsible for our well being. Lifestyle is also important factor for the well being of people.
There is wonderful elaboration of food and various drinks in Ayurveda. It is divided and further subdivided into various categories. For e.g. Fruits, legumes, millets, various meat, milk and milk products, water etc. Every product has described under some special features as Rasa (Taste), Guna (Property), Virya (Potency), Vipaka (Metabolism), Prabhav (Effect). There actions on various organs and systems of body has also described. There is a concept of Vairodhika Ahara (Wrong combination of food). And it has 18 divisions. Such as opposite properties, opposite potency etc. Some food combination causes illness and some are poisonous and some are good for health. So, we should know about these combinations. Specially which are harmful or poisonous. For e.g. Ghrita (Ghee) and Honey are poisonous, if taken in the same quantity, this is called as Matra Viruddha in Ayurveda. And this combination is good if taken in different quantities.

Contraindications :
Ayurvedic therapies have contraindications and the potential for adverse effects or side effects. This is of particular concern when therapies are used incorrectly, are abused or administered improperly, or are prescribed by unqualified practitioners.
Thus, consumers must take responsibility when seeking Ayurvedic therapies. It is imperative to check all practitioners’ credentials, training, and experience.
Consumers must also communicate, both with their conventional and Ayurvedic practitioners. Patients must practice full disclosure about the therapies they are using, and the effects they are experiencing, to avoid potentially dangerous herbal or other therapeutic interactions.
Because many Ayurvedic therapies involve herbal elements, it is important to note that the United States Food and Drug Administration does not regulate herbs or dietary supplements. The International Society for Ayurveda and Health (ISAH), a professional society of Ayurveda in the United States, recommends Ayurvedic therapeutic herbal use only when prescribed and properly supervised by a trained practitioner.
Modality most beneficial for:
In present era, the world is facing with many lifestyle disorders. The causes of lifestyle disorders are unbalanced food, highly refined food, less physical activity and stressful mental conditions mainly. In such type of conditions Ayurveda can play a major role. It can help to reverse the pathogenesis of disease and Nidana Parivarjana (Removal of causative factor) is one of the most important factor in treatment protocol of Ayurveda.
In Ayurveda, removal of causative factor is the first line of treatment of any disease. Lifestyle modification is also an important part of it. Most of the diseases affect physical and mental conditions both in the patients. So, holistic approach is necessary for the proper treatment that can be done with combined efforts of various medical systems. Ayurveda can act effectively as the main medical system or as an alternative medicine system also.
