ETHICAL BEHAVIOR: tends to be good for business and involves demonstrating respect for key moral principles that include honesty, fairness, equality, diginity, diversity and individual rights.
Medicine has a long tradition of self- regulation based on physician's enduring commitment to safeguard the welfare of patients and the trust of the public. The obligation to report incompetent or unethical conduct that may put patients at risk is recognized in both the ethical standards of the profession in law and physicians should be able to report such conduct without loss of favor. The most common unethical behaviors by professionals include a) not telling a patient his true diagnosis because the physician didnot know the details of the diagnosis b) using a patient as a teaching tool for students for long periods of time without the permission of the patient or patient's family c) a lawyer will not return money or provide which was being held for a patient and d) a lawyer represents parties on both sides of a legal transaction.
At least four things specific to medicine impose an obligation of effacement on the physician, and that distinguishes medicine from business and most other careers or forrms of livelihood. They are 1. nature of illness 2. knowledge that is non proprietary c) the nature of treatment that is less likey to cause harm ( patient safety) and 4. the oath- a public promise to be competent and to use that competence in the interest of the sick.
It is not enough to obey the law of the land, neither is it enough to merely observe the ethics of rights and duties. The conduct of a physician or one who practices the art of medicine, was held in the highest esteem and regarded as one who dedicates his life in the service of fello beings in the community. Thus, aphysician is described as a kind,self-sacrificing patients, empathetic, tolerant at all times, to give his best to heal the sick-mentally and physically, not expecting gratitude or reward.
Yes, there is so much changes happened in medical science today from when, each one of them started career. It is not mandatory to take away the certification of certified health education specialists for unethical behaviors, rather a medical practition should remember the patient condition and the oath taken at the time of professions is imperative in certain situations.
