Erikson’s Stages of Development Presentation : Autonomy versus shame/self-doubt - (the stage two was chosen). Question : Assessment differences in the selected developmental age, and the approach that should be applied to this age group?
Autonomy versus shame and doubt is the second stage of Erick Ericksons psychosocial development. This stage occur during 1 and half year up to 3 years. According to erickson in this stage children are focused in developing greater self-control. The major question on the child mind is if she can do things by herself or she need to rely on the help of others. Toilet training plays a major role in this stage learning to control one’s body functions leads to a feeling of control and a sense of independence. Children at this stage often develop the feeling of needing to do things independently, such as picking out what they will wear each day, putting on their own clothes, and deciding what they will eat. It is crucial that parents let their children explore the limit of their abilities within an encouraging development open minded to failure. If the child succeeded it may result to a great sense of autonomy or independence and develop confidence on themselves. If the child failed it may lead to doubting their abilities, may result to feeling of shame and low self-esteem.
