Testing Erikson’s Stages

Instructions. Survey a variety of people (varying in age), asking them to identify the major concern in their life right now (“What is the major concern in your life right now?"). You should try to sample at least 3-4 subjects of widely varying ages and/or gender.

Transcribe their response(s), indicate age and gender (e.g., 39 year old male). Omit any direct reference to the subject's name.

1. 11 year old boy’s major concern is to clear his school with more marks. He says that everyone in the school and at home keeps telling him to score good marks and only then he will be able to succeed in life.
2. 19 year old female’s major concern is to complete the college successfully and get a good job. She says that she wants to become economically independent and prepare well for a highly paying job as it becomes difficult to find jobs.
3. 32 year old male’s major concern is to start a family as he has a good job and enough money to take care of the kids. He says that he is happy with whatever he has but feels that he misses the love and affection of immediate family.
4. 55 year old male’s major concern is to settle the children and look for a voluntary job where he could help disadvantaged people. He says that he has fulfilled almost all his responsibilities in the family and that he can now move on to help others.
