DEFINITION OF OBESITY:
it is defined as the abnormal growth of adipose tssue in body
which leads to obesity. it may be a hypertrophic obesity due to
enlargement of fat cell size or hyperplastic obesity due to
increase in number of fat cell in our body or both.
RISK FACTORS:
1. NON MODIFIED RISK FACTORS:
- age: it can occur in any age and increse with age. we can not
make change in age.
- sex: female usually having high rate of obesity than male
because of the physical work.
- genetic factor: genetic influence is also there. if parents are
obese then it transmit to their next generation also.
2. MODIFIED FACTORS:
- physical activity:regular physical activity or exercise is a
protective measure for weight gain.
- life style: sedentary life style is a part of influencing
weight gain. those who are working in field are having more
physical work as compare to those who are working in offices. the
office worker are having sedentary life style as their physical
work load is less. consumption of alcohol, drugs, smoking also
promote weight gain.
- socio economic status: it is found that obesity has more
prevalent in higher economic status. for example abroad people has
more cardiac disease because of obesity.
- eating habits: frequently eating in between meals, eating
sweets, chocolate, cheese, fast foods etc. now a days social media,
tvs are playing major role in advertisement of fast foods which
makes the teenager to eat more.
- psychological factors: disturbed emotional status . many
psychiatric disease are having symptoms of over eating like
depression, frustration, anxiety etc.
- endocrine factor: sometime hormonal factor also causes obesity
like growth hermone deficiency causes cushing's syndrome.
AETIOLOGY:
- eating of excessive sweets, chocolates, fatty foods, fast foods
etc
- excessive consumption of alcohol
- smoking
- drug consumption like steroids, contraceptives pills, insulin,
adrenergic blockers promote weight gain.
- disease like depression, anxiety, loneliness, and hormonal
imbalance also promote obesity
- low physical activity
- malnourisher
- sedentary life style
CLASSIFICATION OF OBESITY:
obesity is usually classified by using the scale of BMI(body
mass index)
BMI= weight in kg/height in metres square
so BMI= (kg/m2)
if the BMI is < 18.50 it is underweight
18.50 - 24.99 normal weight
> 25.00 is over weight
overweight again divided into
25.00 - 29.99 pre obese
30.00 - 34.99 moderate obesity
35.00 - 39.99 severe obesity
> 40.00 very severe obesity
COMPLICATIONS OF OBESITY:
- cardiac disease
- hyperlipidemia
- hypertention
- osteoarthritis
- vericose vein duet o over weight
- diabetes
- certain type of cancer
PREVENTION OF OBESITY:
- change in dietary pattern. ensure avoiding fatty foods
- change in life style, avoid sedentary life style
- increase physical activity or exercise.
- avoid excessive consumption of drugs, alcohol, and
smoking.
- use appetite supressive drugs according to doctor prescribed.
can go for some surgical treatment like gastric bypass,
gastroplasty, jaw wiring, bariatic surgery as per doctors
advise.
