Explain the importance of scientific notation. Why is it necessary even when using calculators or computers? Provide three real-world examples where scientific notation is used, how it is used, and why. Finally, post three facts that include information about extremely large or small numbers that require scientific notation.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Scientific notation is needed any time you need to express a number that is very big or very small. It is easier to read, and makes it much easier to tell at a glance what the order of magnitude is (rather than counting zeros). scientific notation used in real life and acquire the comprehension of complex concepts such as polynomials and exponents.Scientists use this notation to describe astronomical distances, such as the distance between planets,or microscopic distances, such as the length of a blood cell.Scientific Notation is also consider as a method of writing very large or very small numbers as a number that is between 1 and 10 times a power of 10. That is, M × 10N, where 1 ≤ M < 10. To calculate these numbers, we use the following rules:

(*)If N is positive, then we move the decimal point in M N units to the right.
(*)If N is negative, then we move the decimal point in M N units to the left.

Facts:
1.The drops of water were in a river 12 km long, 270 m wide, and 38 m deep (one drop is one millilitre). It's much more compact and meaningful to write the answer as roughly than it is to write (123120000000000).

2.The Earth is about 150,000,000KM from the Sun.We can also say that the Earth is about(1.5*10^8)KM away from the Sun.

3.A red blood cell is about 0.000008 meters long.We can also say that a red blood cell is about(8.0*10^-6)meters long.
