How will you make the judgement to prescribe bacteriostatic-bactericidal antibiotic?
There are two type of generic antibiotics present in the pharmaceuticals, bacteriostatic and bacteriocidal. The identificaiton of the nature of antiobiotic can be made as discussed below:
1. Bacteriostatic: A bacteriostatic antibiotic is the one which suppresses the growth of microb without killing them. These antibiotics show suppressed microbial growth till treatment is given and the bacterial growth re-appears after the regimen is completed.
2. Bacteriocidal: A bacteriocidal antibiotic is the one which altogether kills the bacteria by various physico-chemical methods and thus completely eliminates the microbe from the host.
Thus, depending upon the need of the treatment, an appropriate antimicrobial treatment modality might be used.
