Indicate each statement as No Evolution or Evolution Occurring (If Evolution is Occurring indicate by Selection or No Selection) with a brief explanation:

  1. 10 generations of selective breeding, and no change in the environment, produces dogs that bark less.
  2. Humans today are larger than our ancestors because we have access to better nutrition.
  3. Swimming ability is random with respect to genetics, and individuals that swim better survive the annual flood along the river. Over time, the population has more good swimmers.
  4. Individual plants have an allele for either red flowers or blue flowers. The deer grazing in your yard prefers to eat the red flowers and so the blue flowers survive and reproduce more.
  5. Digit length in Ay Ayes is heritable. After a strong bout of selection, you find that all Aye Ayes have the same length of digits
  6. A mutation conferring resistance to distemper occurs in racoons. Within 7 generations, you find that 50% of individuals in the population have the mutation

Solutions

Expert Solution

a. Evolution is occurring to selective breeding. So the dogs which bark less are selected and bred in this case. Selection occurred.

b.No evolution. Size of an individual is genetically based. But if proper nutrition is available an individual can reach maximum size possible. In this case the availability of nutrition is allowing the individual to reach the maximum potential that an individual can grow as per the genetic ability.

c. No evolution occurs. Because the people along the river get affected by floods. Non swimmers get swept away due to floods. Swimmers are surviving , hence their numbers are more. Because swimming is not genetically inherited. So no selection by the nature.

d.Evolution occurs. This is because the red flowers are getting eaten and seeds are formed by blue flowers only. So with more generations, blue flower plants number increases much more than the red flower plants.

e. Evolution has occurred. This is because, of the strong selection has resulted in all having same length digits. Selection of a particular trait leads to evolution. Selection occurred.

f. Evolution occurs. When a mutation occurs, it is in just one individual. From being in one individual, it has increased to 50% of the individuals in the population. This shows that the mutant allele is selected strongly by the nature. Selection occurred.
