How might a person with Type A personality differ in their stress levels than person with a Type B personality
Personalities were broadly classified into 2 types : Type A and
Type B based on studies done by Cardiologists Friedman and
Rosenman. The longitudinal study was done on healthy men who were
between 35 and 60 years old to see who were more susceptible to
heart problems based on their personality.
Type A Personality includes characteristics such as
having high energy, being driven by internal and external motives,
constant need to push oneselves, very high achieving, competitive,
ambitious, impatient and sometimes even agressive. They constantly
look at life as a race and deal with losses badly. They like to
always be on their toes and aim for many things at the same time.
They like being under constant pressure and thrive on meeting
deadlines. As a result, they seem to be under constant levels of
stress which if not dealt with could lead to coronory heart
disease.
Type B Personality on the other hand, includes characteristics such
as being more relaxed and laid back. People with these personality
traits like to enjoy the work that is given to them and focus on
one thing at a time. They are aware of their own limitations and do
not set goals which are unrealistic for them. They dont concentrate
on winning or losing but rather want to enjoy the game. They stick
to one aim at a time. As a result, their personality ensures that
their level of stress in low and that they dont remain under
constant pressure for a long time.
