You have been assigned to care for Jack, a 15-year-old patient who sustained multiple fractures of the lower extremities in a skiing accident. Morphine sulfate is one of the drugs used in his care. Jack’s parents are aware of the need for various treatments, including the use of morphine sulfate to treat his pain, but they worry he may become addicted to the medication.

1) When the drugs are taken over a long period of time the patient may become addicted and it cause harmful to their health . Addicion refers that habitual use of drug usually the person is physicall and psychologically dependent upon the drug and the tendency to use again.Opioids analgesics suppress pain impulses but can suppress respiraton and coughing by acting on the respiratory and cough center in the medulla of the brainstem. Opioid can produce produce euphoria and seation and can cause physical dependance .It can be use for relief of mild,moderate and severe pain..Respiratory depression is the priority concern with morphine sulphate along with orthostatic hypotension and constipation.
2)Physical dependance is when the adapts to a substance due to its usage over a long period of time and its abrupt cessation causes unpleasent physical symptoms .Opioids are used for pain manangement and when the patiennt uses it for longer periods body builds up a tolerates and becomes dependent on it.Normally the body is able to produce enough opioids to prevent withdrawal symptoms.
3) Chronic use of opioids cause dependence in users.Abstinence syndrome is defines as refraining from the use drugs abruptly may cause some withdrawal symptoms.Few ways to prevent abstinence syndrome is by detoxification programs,strong support system,good impulse control and rehabilitation care.Never stop taking opioids abruptly but it should be done under medical supervision
