Suppose that 0.86 g of water condenses on a 80.0 −g block of iron that is initially at 22 ∘C.

If the heat released during condensation goes only to warming the iron block, what is the final temperature (in ∘C) of the iron block? (Assume a constant enthalpy of vaporization for water of 44.0 kJ/mol.) Answer in Torr.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Molar mass of water = 18 g/mol
number of moles of water, n = mass / molar mass
                                                            = 0.86/18
                                                            = 0.048 mol
Heat released = n*Lv
                              = 0.048 * 44
                              =2.102 KJ
                              = 2102 J

specific heat capcity of iron, C= 0.45 J/goC
Q = m*C* (Tf-Ti)
2102 = 80*0.45*(Tf-22)
Tf-22 = 58.4
Tf = 80.4 oC
Answer: 80.4 oC
