12. The two strategies one can implement to overcome consent issues for Aboriginal and Torres strait islander patients are 1. Overcome language barrier which may include
* Avoid using complex words.
* Explain why you are asking questions
* Always check you are understanding the meaning of words and vice versa
* Use images videos to explain consents
2. The other strategy is being grounded. The most common type of informed consent resources are those which target consumers and provide information about a recommended procedure or range of treatment options. These resources are paper based although many can be provided in alternative formats including audio recording and DVD's.
13. Strategies like being grounded in a social view of health, including advocacy and addressing social determinants, employing Aboriginal staff are the best three examples of strategies which can be implemented in order to support the development of effective partnerships between staff and Aboriginal and Torres strait islander people and their community.
14. There are a range of resources that might be used to promote
and support effective partnerships with Indigenous people and
facilitate accessibility, affordability, accountability,
acceptability of appropriate health care and workplace
services.
The use of suitable protocols is required when dealing with
individuals and communities to promote and support effective
partnerships.
Cross-cultural training awareness courses have been used and have
resulted in a bigger appreciation of Indigenous culture and
improved ability of mainstream service providers to connect on
suitable levels with Indigenous individuals and communities.
