Why is diarrhoea an adverse effect of some medications?
Diarrhea is a common side effect of many medicines. It is mostly antibiotics which are the common culprits behind Diarrhea. Besides antibiotics, NSAIDs, laxative medicines containing magnesium ( such as antacids), some antisickness drugs may also cause diarrhea.
Often Antibiotics like ampicillin, clindamycin and cephalosporins, etc cause good bacteria that live normally in the large intestine to get destroyed. These antibiotic-induced changes in intestinal bacteria allow overgrowth of another bacteria, Clostridium difficile (C. difficile), which is the cause of a more serious antibiotic-induced diarrhea. The bacteria, C. difficile can cause colitis, an inflammation of the intestine in which the bowel gives out excess water and mucus, resulting in loose, watery stools. Antibiotic-induced colitis is treated by another antibiotic that acts on C. difficile. Diarrhea also can be a side effect of NSAIDS drugs which cause colitis, due to the action on the lining of the intestine. Colchicine is a common cause of drug-induced diarrhea. Magnesium-containing antacids can have the effect of laxatives and cause diarrhea if overused.
