What are some of the reasons why patients are noncompliant with prescribed medications? Provide at least three reasons. Then, select one medication and discuss causes and consequences of noncompliance and possible solutions.
Answer:- The basic principle of non compliance is the failure to
take medication according to prescribed directions.
- Reasons of non compliance with medication are as follow-
1. MEDICATION SIDE-EFFECTS:-
- there would be some side effects of a medications other than
their intended target.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION:-
-be honest with clients about side effects.
-Discuss the typical side effects of the medications that the
client is taking, and suggest ways for combating them.
-For example - Anti-anxiety and sleeping pills are best taken in
the morning.
2. MEDICATION COST:-
- Mostly branded drugs are costly.
- So poor and the elderly on fixed and low incomes are breaking
their medications in half or taking them every other day.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION:-
- start a client choice plan in a insurance company.
- Explain wide range of advantages of taking drugs.
- Suggest comparison shopping among several pharmacies.
3. The "I AM CURED" SYNDROME:-
- Mostly people, once their symptoms remit, discontinue the
drug.
- Many people taking madication serves as an ever-present reminder
of something undesirable, such as a physical illness or mental
disorder.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION:-
- intermittently remind the patient that if medication has fostered
improvement, then don't discontinuation without the approval from
prescriber.
