Compare and contrast Diabetes Type 1 and 2 in relation to onset, treatment and education for each group.
Onset : Type 1 diabetes is basically and autoimmune disorder in which there is lack of insulin , thats why called as insulin dependent diabetes mellitus whereas Type 2 diabetes is non insulin dependent and developes when the body is not responding to insulin, which is called as insulin resistance. This may be due to excessive growth hormones or obesity etc.
Treatment : Insulin is the first line and only treatment for diabetes melitus type 1. For type 2 we use oral hypoglycemic agents mainly like metformin. Insulin is just used if no response to these agents is seen , to tide over any surgery or trauma and if the conditions like ketotic hyperosmolar coma developes.
Education : A type 1 patient may be instructed about he should administer the insulin and how the signs of hypoglycemia can be looked for including its treatment. Proper diet and exercise should be advised .Similarily in type 2 , weight reduction , diet and exercise is must
