Bipolar disorder patient explain and add nursing intervention
Bipolar disorderd characterized by recurrent episodes of mania and depression in the same patient at diffrent time. Manic episode characterized by eleveated mood, loud speech, hyperactivity, grandiose delusion etc. Depressive episode characterized by depressive mood, decreased psycho motor activity, negative view, suicidal ideations, etc.
Exact cause of bipolar disorders are unknown. Onset usually occur between ages of 20 to30.
Nursing intervention during manic episode
Keep the environmetal stimuli to minimum. Remove the hazardous objects and substance.
Assist the patient to engage in activities such as writing, drawing etc.
Stay with patient and close monitoring of patient is needed.
Provide high calarie diet and provide finger foods to maintain the nutritional status of patient.
Set limits on malipulative activities.
Nursing interventions at depressive episode
Assess the behavior of patient. Talk with patient about safe and unsafe behaviour.
Limit patient's participation in activity if the safety can not be ensured.
Identify the factor that aggravate and alleviate the patient's performance.
State rules, expectations and responsibilities clearly to the patient, including consequences for exceeding limits.
