First and foremost it's very necessary to explain the condition in a simple and understandable manner, if any of our family member asks to explain regarding bipolar disorder and how their loved one got it ,we can address them firstly by explain what the condition is;

Bipolar disorder is a type of illness ,in which your loved one will produce some dramatic swings in mood ; which means your loved one will alternate with the period of mania ( that is elevated mood ) and period of depression ( that is feeling of intense sadness ).in between these two extremes of mania and depression ,your loved one will have periods of normal mood .

your loved one got this because of any of these factors ;

*) Bipolar disorder is mainly occurs due to some chemical imbalance that occurs in the brain .because these chemicals are the one which are responsible for controlling the brain function ,they are called neuro transmitter and include nor-adrenaline , serotonin and dopamine

for example : the manic episode occur when the nor adrenaline level become too high and depressive episode occur when the noradrenaline level become too low .

* Bipolar disorder also runs in the family because it is linked to genetics . A family member of a person with bipolar disorder have an increased risk of developing it themselves .

* It may also develop due to

. Exposure to some stressfull situation like breakdown of relationship , physical,sexual or emotional abuse , death of closed family member or loved one  

* It develop due to some other physical illness , sleep disturbances ,problems with money ,work etc

It is very necessary to support your loved one to take the medication at the right time and to go for psychological counseling .
