Mood disorders are mental disorders characterized by distorted emotional states, which alter ability to function normally. The patient may be depressed or manic.
CLIENT FROM A CLINICAL SETTING -
Sam , a 14 yr old adolescent was brought in the clinic . He complained of sad mood, loss of appetite, loss of interest in any activity, fatigue, restlessness, suicidal thoughts.
Brief history- This stage started 1 year back , when he was referred to a psychologist on account of his unexplained fights with his schoolmates and family members. He was then diagnosed with depression and was given appropriate treatment.
Recently , a heartbreak has led to the relapse of his condition.
MEDICATIONS USED TO CURE DEPRESSION -
✓ Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
✓ Dopamine reuptake blocker.
✓ Monamine oxidase inhibitors.
✓ Tetracyclic antidepressants.
PROBLEM THAT WAS NOT RESOLVED - although medical treatment was given, the patient was not able to recover from his heartbreak. At this age, it becomes the duty of the parent to instill coping mechanism for such failures in life. The adolescent should be taught to strengthen himself in such situations. Medical treatments can only work as palliative treatment in such cases.
NURSING INTERVENTION - the patient requires psychological support along with the medical treatment. We made sure to build up the confidence of this adolescent. Teaching the parents about the gravity of the situation, so that they understand the perspective of the child helped the child to cope up with the situation. Behavioral therapy really helped the child keep safe.
