How does an understanding of management and organizational behavior lead to organizational effectiveness and efficiency? Why is the study of management theories (classical, behavioral and modern management) relevant today?
Organizational behavior is defined as the study of human behavior in organizations (Uhl-Bien, Schermerhorn, &Osborn, 2014). A manager is defined as a person who supports and is responsible for the work of others (Schermerhorn, 2014). When a manager understands that those they are managing are people and not just employees it will inspire efficiency. Things are constantly changing in business and with more and more technology it creates more competition for work. Being able to lead under these changing times is important for effectiveness and efficiency. Being a manager is not about being a “boss” but more about leading your team. Learning how to change with the times and embrace the diversity in a workplace is key to being a good leader. The study of management theories is very relevant today. Behavioral management was something that Mary Parker Follett advocated for. It basically states that social responsibility, respect for workers, and better cooperation throughout organizations and she warned against too much hierarchy. I feel like it is a no brainer that treating people right and not like they are beneath you is good business. This theory also talks about ethics and corporate social responsibility which is a major topic in today’s world.
