It shall be noted that task performance refers to the performance of duties listed in one’s job description, whereas, organizational citizenship behaviors involve performing behaviors that are more discretionary behaviors employees perform to help others and benefit the organization.
From the perspective of the organization, organizational citizenship behaviors are more important than task performance. This is because it helps build a team that is collectively driven to achieve goals and objectives. Under organizational citizenship behaviors, employees perform to help others and benefit the organization. Helping a new coworker understand how things work in this company, volunteering to organize the company picnic, and providing suggestions to management about how to improve business processes are some examples of citizenship behaviors. This helps build a team of trust & integrity. Different people are with different skill sets. Employees can reach out for help & support without any hesitation.
For citizenship behaviors, the motivation-behavior link is clearer. This further strengthens the interpersonal relationship and helps develop a high-quality relationship, in which each employee feels the obligation to reciprocate and go the extra mile to help them out. People are happier at work. They are more committed to their companies. Employees have overall positive attitudes toward their work.
