Suppose you worked at a company that implemented a new wellness policy that required that you take health screenings each year for weight, cholesterol, tobacco use, and other health indicators. According to the wellness policy, if you do not achieve a high enough wellness score you will be required to make changes in your diet, exercise habits, or eliminate tobacco. Those who do not comply with the wellness policy face financial penalties. How would this wellness policy make you feel about working for this employer? Would you feel better (the employer is being unfair by trying to regulate my health), worse (the employer is being unfair by trying to regulate my life), or indifferent to your employer for having this wellness policy? How would the policy affect your job behavior? Would you increase you effort, maintain it, decrease it, or start looking for another job? What explains your positive or negative reactions to this wellness policy?
I would be satisfied with the wellness policy and feel valued by the employer that he is taking such measures to ensure that the employees maintain their health. Being a health-conscious person, I would love the added push by the employer to maintain my diet and health.
It wouldn't affect my work performance. instead, I believe it would increase my productivity as I will ensure to do regular exercise to maintain my weight and health. This will help me by reducing mental distress and would help me in performing better.
Having a positive attitude explains my reaction towards the wellness policy. We should all appreciate it when an organization or person takes a necessary step even if it is unpleasant. Being in an office and working in a 9 to 5 job can take its toll on the body of the employees and affects their physical health. Such a measure of the company will help he employees in taking better care of themselves and will result in developing a healthier workofce.
